Get a glamorous, star look on a night out

Your eyes OR your mouth...

The biggest mistake to make when putting on makeup is to highlight both the eye & the mouth. You need to pick one or the other & downplay the one rejected. How to pick? Simply, pick what people compliment you on! If you choose to focus on your lips, you'll want to go bright. Red is hot for night, as are dark pinks. Just stay away from brown & make sure you keep your eye makeup soft & simple. If you want to play up your eyes, go all out with liner, shadow, mascara & even false eyelashes. Just make sure you stick with light lips capped with a light gloss.

Things to remember on your way out...
Don't forget these 3 things, apply liner & lipstick and powder your oily areas (forehead, chin & nose). If you are posing for a picture remember those 3 things and do them immediately before posing; & stand a bit sideways with one foot in front of the other -- you'll look 10 pounds thinner. Trust that. It's the red carpet stars' secret.

Applying your natural looking blush...
What do your cheeks look like after you've been out in the cold or exercising at the gym? For a quick test, pinch your cheeks & wait a second. Another trick is to try to match your lip color. Those are the tones to replicate. For day, choose a lighter color than you would at night, and in winter go for pink shades while in summer opt for peachy, warm hues. Apply foundation, eye color & lipstick. Blush should be your last makeup step. Determine your face shape: are you oval, heart, round, long, or square? Knowing this helps you determine where it's best to apply the blush. Use a professional full brush instead (I like MAC's blush brush No. 116), but don't use the same brush you use for your powder, forget that barbie-sized blush brush that comes with the blush. Tap any excess powder off your brush before you use it, Sweep color in an arc following the line of your cheekbone up from the apple of your cheek to your hairline. Keep color light & blended. You want a wash of color, rather than an obvious line. For a sun-kissed sheen: dab a small bit of bronzer powder on your forehead, chin & nose. Make sure it doesn't look like a stripe.

Get rid of those circles...
Use a proper concealer. Choose concealer that's a shade lighter than your foundation. And if your circles are very dark, go 2 shades lighter. You might be choosing a concealer that's too light if you are getting a 'raccoon look.' Be sure to apply stick concealers with your finger, not out of the tube.

Don't forget your lips...
Leave your pinks in the drawer during the summer. Peach tinged lip colors look terrific against bronzed skin. If you have a lip lining pencil that is rather hard, try using it over lips that have been prepared with a good coating of lip balm. The pencil will color the lips easily and has lasting power as well. (And don't simply line them; color your entire lips with the pencil). To have a fuller upper lip, outline the lips with a pencil that is the same shade as your lips. Now on the center of the upper lip, use a brown pencil and draw a second line. Apply lip color and the brown will blend right in... But your top lip will definitely look fuller.
